Albany Parking Authority to Launch New Parking Meters and Mobile Parking App, which is available for download now

New technology to start in test area on State Street week of June 26

ALBANY, NY – Albany parking services are moving into the 21st century. New meters and ParkAlbany, a mobile payment application that will allow users to pay for parking on their smart phone, will make parking in Albany easier than ever before. The new ParkAlbany app is available for download now.

During a test program, a total of 12 new meters will be placed on State Street, between Eagle Street and Broadway beginning the week of June 26th. The goal of this capital upgrade is to give residents and visitors of Albany a hassle-free parking experience. The Albany Parking Authority is also launching a newly designed website at www.ParkAlbany.com.

“This new technology will change the way people think of parking in Albany,” said Parking Authority Board Chairman Kevin O’Connor. “It is important we continue to make parking in our city an easier experience for all.”

The new meters are made by Parkeon, an international leader in the industry. The parker will simply input their license plate number when completing a transaction, eliminating the need to return to their car to place the receipt on the dashboard. The meters also feature solar panels for power, allow for easy transactions and can even provide parkers with relevant news about happenings in the area.

The meters are also ADA compliant, and are made to withstand our cold winters. Additionally, the meters have the capability of offering coupons for adjacent businesses.

The new pay-by-phone technology will provide parkers with the option of skipping the meter all together and pay from their smart phone. Parkers can also add time from the mobile app if their stay is longer than anticipated. ParkAlbany, the mobile app, will be powered through Passport, a leader in mobile parking.

“We are very excited about the new parking technology coming to Albany,” said Georgette Steffens, the executive director of the Downtown Albany Business Improvement District. “Both employees and visitors to Albany businesses will greatly benefit from the ease and convenience of the new parking system. Everyone will have more freedom to come and go, with more convenient options to pay for parking.”

The ParkAlbany app will be free to download from the App Store or Google Play. Drivers can also manage their parking online at Albany.ppprk.com. Demonstrations of all new technologies can be found on the revamped www.ParkAlbany.com.
