The Egg Performing Arts Center is the place to be this month for dazzling folk music, with the venue’s corner-free setup providing immaculate acoustics! Led by John Darnielle, The Mountain Goats are known for producing their early songs through lo-fi home recordings made on personal boomboxes, then issuing their releases on as 7-inch vinyl and cassette tapes. They’ve since slowed their output, but focused their sound into an intriguing fusion of folk/rock that has stood the test of time between old and new fans alike. 10/14: Fozzy at Empire Live

Rock and wrestling often go together, but how many rock bands are fronted by a wrestling icon? WWE/AEW legend Chris Jericho’s band Fozzy is stopping by Empire Live this month, and you don’t want to miss it! Formed in Atlanta in 1999 as Fozzy Osbourne, this group was initially a cover band assembled by Rich “The Duke” Ward from whatever musicians he could find in a given week. After meeting Chris Jericho in San Antonio following a wrestling show, Rich invited Chris to play a few shows with the band, with the first being in Marietta, Georgia and by 2000, Jericho (performing under the identity “Mongoose McQueen”) had fully joined the band  now known simply as “Fozzy”! In the early years, Jericho refused to acknowledge that he and McQueen were the same person, and while in his wrestling persona Jericho would often state that he was a “huge fan” of Mongoose and Fozzy, while Mongoose would say the same about Jericho. Fozzy adopted a satirical backstory of being stranded rock stars that had their music snatched and re-recorded by other bands in the early 2000s and released 2 records of only hair metal covers. They eventually dropped their fictitious story and the McQueen persona to release original material in 2005 through their album All That Remains, which was met with widespread acclaim and popularity. Fozzy has since operated as a well-oiled rock machine, releasing 6 albums of hard-hitting original rock/heavy metal. For those looking to rock this month, Fozzy at Empire Live is the perfect show to bang your head and experience this one-of-a-kind band right here in Albany!

From roots and blues to soul and R&B, the band’s sound is known for being tied together by their instrumentation, New Orleans-style songwriting, and distinctive vocal harmonies. With the unique blending of all these musical elements in place the quartet began playing in Oakland subways where they gained a loyal fanbase that grew into national attention and landed them a spot in Poland’s Rawa Blues Festival! The California Honeydrops continued touring and their fan base continued growing thanks to notable performances at the New Orleans Jazz Fest, the Byron Bays Bluesfest, and as an opening act for Bonnie Raitt in 2016! With no goals for the album, the trio released a 15 song record titled CZARFACE, with the album artwork resembling scenes from an action-based comic. Visuals aside, the album was met with widespread acclaim, and the group adopted the album’s title as the group’s official name! Czarface was later written as a mascot for the group and would be referenced in their future lyrics, album artwork, and lauded comic series! This written persona was further developed and expanded upon in both the group’s subsequent 14 releases and in the official comic book “Czarface: A Czar is Born” from 2021. Since then, Phish has maintained an extremely dedicated fanbase thanks to the band encouraging “bootleg” recordings of live shows to share with one another, fostering a sense of community with pre-show gatherings, and ensuring no two Phish shows ever have the same setlist! Known for always mixing it up and injecting their patented psychedelic rock/funk/jazz fusion into their dazzling jams and unusual vocal arrangements, Phish has been a household name for over 40 years, and are arguably the biggest jam band since the Grateful Dead! Between October 25th-27th, fans will jam out for a good cause here in New York’s Capital City, with all proceeds benefiting the Divided Sky Foundation; a Ludlow, Vermont-based nonprofit founded by Trey Anastasio and Melanie Gulde dedicated to providing a safe, supportive location for those struggling with addiction to begin their recovery.
