Albany Parking Authority adds more Multi Space Meters along Washington Avenue

ALBANY.-  The Albany Parking Authority is adding 25 more of the multi-space parking meters starting Monday.  At least two blocks of spaces will be opened daily near the New York State Capitol and along Washington Avenue to Lark Street.

On Tuesday, the Albany Parking Authority expects to be working on Washington Avenue across from the State Capitol, making its way around to the other side later in the week on Friday or early the next week.

The first ten spaces will open on Elk Street and Hawk Street, then the rest will continue up the north side of Washington Avenue to Lark Street, looping back down the south side of Washington Avenue to Eagle Street and then on State Street from Swan to Eagle on both sides.

More than 200 single-space parking meters will be removed.  The first solar meters were installed last year on State Street.

The meters will extend the two-hour parking limit to 10 hours.  The meters accept credit and debit card payments using Visa, MasterCard and Discover in addition to accepting coins.  The rates gradually increase the longer one parks.

The streets affected by this expansion include parts of Washington Avenue, Lark Street, Swan Street, Eagle Street, Hawk Street, Elk Street, and Spring Street.

These streets currently have a two-hour parking limit at $1.25 an hour.  The same rate will apply for the first two hours under the new system, and then increase by 25 cents per hour.  The meters contain signs showing the rate structure.

After parking their car, drivers will go to a nearby multi-space parking meter to purchase their desired amount of time.  They will get a receipt, which they should then place face up on the passenger side of their dashboard.

For people who drive motorcycles or convertibles, the authority has purchased receipt/permit display devices to secure the receipts, which it sells to the public at below market prices.
